I’ve named external hard drive hippocampus. It’s a friendly name, and a nice thing to remember in the midst of all this new school feeling, which hasn’t really left. Perhaps I should make my projects about that? Better get back to current sound project.
Aim: to create a minuet and trio in rant major.
Theme: pronouns, public space and toilets.
Recorded sound: (my voice) pronouns, rant sounds, thoughts, a bach minuet.
Treatment: play the pronouns through a midi keyboard, onto a minuet structure.
Draft thoughts:
Tension between drawing room feel of dinky piano minuet and public toilet atmosphere. Would rather install this piece in public toilets and let them play. If I videoed that then I’d have an installation video too.
If I was making this sound piece to play in public toilets, what changes to the sound quality/ structure/ content would I make? Adding a minuet could be rather odd. Hearing the recorded sound of toilet doors, and toilets flushing in an actual public toilet could be odd and disconcerting. Shifts in pitch of a voice – as soon as we hear a voice we ascribe a gender, whether we’re right or not. This is a tension i want to play with.
